These are the bars used to connect the front torsion beams to the framehead for extra strengthening.

Front Axle Support Struts, or Vorderachsabstutzung, Reparstursatze 111 498 001 und 111 498 001A

These were fitted to the front axle of cars going to countries with rough terrain and help stop the frame head cracking.

There were two types: the early type (001) is for the Link pin front axle, and the later type (001A) for the Ball-joint front axle. They will not fit the Type 3 or the 1302/3 models. 

They clamp to the front axle and are bolted to the frame head supports under the body with the longer bolts provided.

They are considered to be a very useful item to have on a competition Beetle. The VW 181/2 has a similar arrangement as standard.
